_When my children had colds, I sought the advice of my friend, Victoria, because as a nutritionist, I knew she would recommend recipes that would not only appeal to them, but would actively aid their recovery. The idea for this book came from our desire that a book existed which would provide specific guidance, recipes and advice for children when they are ill with minor childhood ailments, (colds, flu,ear-ache etc). When children are unwell, it can be a stressful or anxious time for parents, and a relevant and informative book on the specific topic would be invaluable.
By combining our skills, we wish to create a collaboration of the science of nutrition with the visual and the sensory We felt the use of illustration, combined with nutritional information on how food “makes you better” could further encourage children to eat well.
My educational experience includes a degree in Theatre Design, and an MA from the Slade school of Art and I have taught art and design to children and young adults. I presently work with deaf adults in further and higher education, which challenges me to seek creative ways of communicating information. Likewise this project presents and exciting challenge to convey complex nutritional theory in a visually engaging and coherent form. I have used botanical-style illustration to construct a dream-world where children (who are in reality, recovering in bed or indoors) play in lush gardens of ripe fruit and enticing vegetables.
